Nearly three dozen volunteers turned out Saturday morning to make sure the graves of military veterans are easily recognized with American flags. Sponsored by the Henryetta VFW Post 530 and American Legion Post 85, the flags are placed on the graves at Henryetta, Sonora, Wilson, Salem and Grayson. Those veterans honored range from as recent as the Gulf wars to the Civil War. One of the graves receiving a flag was that of James H Sands who was a member of the 7th Tennessee Mounted Infantry from 1864 to 1865. There are other Civil War veterans as well as Spanish American War, World Wars One and Two, Korea and Vietnam at Westlawn.
A Memorial Day service will be held at the cemetery Monday at 10 a.m. and will include recognition of the fallen veterans who are laid to rest here as well as in cemeteries around the world.
