An abbreviated Memorial Day service was held at Westlawn Cemetery Monday morning honoring the men and women who served in the various branches of the military and gave their lives for their nation.
The service was conducted by the Henryetta VFW Post 539 and American Legion Post 85 with flags decorating the graves of every veteran.
VFW Service officer Patricia Baird presented a song written by a retired Oklahoma National Guard recruiter. Henryetta mayor Jennifer Munholland was originally scheduled to be the guest speaker but was unable to attend due to family health issues.
Bill Goodner said so many of the veterans are recognized only when the flags are placed on their graves each Memorial Day. "It is essential we attend these Memorial Day observances to keep their memories alive," he said. "About 2,500 flags have been placed on veterans graves in southern Okmulgee County. They are placed there as a way of respect."
Members of both service organizations demonstrated the correct way to fold the American flag then members of the Henryetta Knight Brigade band played taps. They included: Lucas Thompson, Xander Lollis, Nick Crow and Quinton Story.
