Memorial Day weekend is getting closer and members of the Henryetta VFW and American Legion are making plans to put flags on the graves of veterans in area cemeteries.
Since the project is such a major undertaking, volunteers are being sought to help. Anyone wishing to participate should meet at Westlawn Cemetery Saturday, May 28 at 10 a.m. to pick up their flags. Those volunteers will be needed that evening at 4 p.m. to pick up the flags. In the event of rain, the flag pickup will be delayed a day.
The annual Memorial Day program will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. at the veterans section of Westlawn in Henryetta. All veterans and members of the public are invited to attend.
Last year VFW members discovered a number of bronze veterans’ markers in Henryetta as well as area cemeteries were not set properly so they could be readily seen.
That has led to the start of a program to reset those markers.
“If a family member thinks the marker of their loved one is not correctly installed, they should contact us at the VFW,” said Hugh Jackson. He pointed out the cost of concrete for a proper pad is $16.10. “If they want us to install them at another cemetery the cost is $40, he added.
