deq visit

Representatives from the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) were in town Tuesday to examine the Iron and Metals junk yard located on West Main.
The site has been a proposed Superfund site by both the ODEQ and federal Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for several years. A meeting in 2019 revealed levels of PCBs and other heavy metals including mercury were found on the site.
The three-acre junk yard was one of five across the United States proposed to be a superfund subject.
In 2017 soil samples were taken with elevated concentrations of those heavy metals in the area.
That resulted in about 18 inches of soil removed from private and public property.
After DEQ personnel walked around the site, they met with city officials to determine the next step toward the cleanup.
