Henryetta is going to be represented at one of the top film festivals in the United States and around the world.
HHS graduate Maddie Walters was notified that her screenplay, “Life’s a Witch,” was selected to be in the competition at the Stillwater Red Dirt Film Festival.
For the past ten years that festival has been a launchpad for writers and musicians. It is held April 14 through 16 this year and winners will have the opportunity to get known by directors and film makers.
Walters’ screenplay deals with a witch who lost her magical powers but had her life changed when she met and struck up a friendship with a little girl.
“I started writing this in August of 2021,” she said. It took her until December of that year to get the first draft then submitted it to the Festival last year.
The daughter of Derek and Tina Walters, she graduated from Henryetta high school in 2019 and is a student at the University of Tulsa. Her major in English and creative writing is serving her well. She has provided stories and reviews for New Noise magazine in California as well as Tulsa People magazine and has a column, Music & Mayhem, in the TU college paper.
While writing those columns is a good achievement, she said being selected for the Red Dirt Festival was something that she had hoped for but was still a surprise.
“If you had told me in high school that I would be doing this, I would not have believed it.”
