storm drain starts

East Main has been choked down to one lane in front of Taco Bell as city workers start installing a new 42-inch storm drain line. The line will replace a decades-old galvanized pipe that has rusted and collapsed backing up during heavy rains. The line will go east along Main then turn south of South E Street and empty into Coal Creek. It is estimated that some five weeks will be required before the project is completed.

As a salute and thanks to all healthcare workers, first responders and other essential personnel working the front lines to fight COVID-19, the 138th Fighter Wing, Oklahoma Air National Guard, included Henryetta in a flyover Thursday afternoon. The four jet fighters zoomed past Hillcrest Henryetta hospital as a number of hospital workers cheered them on. In addition, nearly 1,000 people were on hand packing the cemetery and hospital parking lots to witness the flyover.

lake washout

Years of water cascading over the spillway at Nichols Park have been taking a toll on the ground and that came to a head this week. Erosion has washed away the soil and subsurface under Lake Road creating a danger of losing the pavement. Okmulgee County District 3 commissioner James Connor said he is hauling in rocks and fill material to repair the damage. Those repairs are expected to be done later this week which means traffic will be restricted to one lane for a short period. "There has been contention in the past over whether it is the county or city responsibility but we are working together to make these repairs," he said.

Even though some non-essential businesses have been given the green light to open their doors, some are still putting their own restrictions on serving customers. As can be seen above, the Main Barber Shop is calling for appointments only. That is the same with beauty shops around town who also say they want their customers to call first and schedule times. Restaurants and some other businesses will start opening next month.

There were lions, tigers, cows and even dinosaurs around Henryetta Saturday. A special social distancing drive through zoo was organized by the Henryetta Elementary Booster Club giving youngsters an opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy a perfect spring day while looking at some great displays.
