This weekend is going to be a special time for current and former members of the Henryetta First United Methodist Church.
On Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30 the church will be marking 122 years as part of Henryetta's religious community. Former pastors will be on hand and a room full of memories, photographs and records will be available for viewing.
Church pastor David Shahan and deacon James McCullough spent some time Monday talking about the celebration and reviewing the long road the church has taken to get to this point.
The decades-long tradition of Henryetta Lions Club members celebrating Easter with an egg hunt continued Saturday morning. Well over 1,000 eggs were picked up by youngsters in the hopes of finding prizes ranging from stickets to bicycles. Even the Easter Bunny joined the Lionmascot welcoming the children to Nichols Park.
Anyone who has driven down West Main has seen a major difference in the appearance of that area.
Since last summer crews have been busy cleaning up the Henryetta Iron and Metal property including removing vehicles, buildings and an assortment of junk.
According to a report released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) a total of 8,252.11 tons of contaminated soil has been removed as of the end of February.
Another 200 tons of debris has been removed along with 438 tires found on the property.
The latest report available was dated Feb. 28 and another report is expected to be issued in the next couple of weeks.
EPA officials said the work has exceeded what was originally planned but there is still more work hat has to be done.
Testing on the site has found contamination ranging from polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to eight 55-gallon barrels of what was termed Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM).
The ongoing work is the latest in the cleanup effort.
From October through November 2018, the EPA conducted a residential cleanup action on three residential properties, adjacent rights-of-ways and an alleyway south of the industrial property. The cleanup included the removal and disposal of contaminated soils and oil field piping. These properties were restored with clean topsoil and sod/rock and the installation of a metal fence between the industrial property and the residential properties.
No estimate was given as to when the work would be completed.
Congressman Josh Brecheen spent over an hour in Henryetta Wednesday morning with nearly 50 area residents. During his town hall-style meeting, he discussed the federal budget deficit, problems funding Medicare and Social Security in the years to come and answered a number of questions from the audience.
Steve Sanford and Vernon Vanmeter will be the next Henryetta city council members.
The pair won overwhelmingly in the Tuesday election
Retired school teacher Ginny Holder also received the most votes to take the office 3 position on the Henryetta school board.
In the Ward 1 race, Sanford received 347 votes with Bill Goodner getting 108, Greg Williams 45 and Annette Sisson 38.
Ward 2 saw Vanmeter get 270 votes followed by Shawn Buzan with 104, Christy Jeffcoat 83 and Melissa Heminover 70.
Holder will be sworn in at the April 10 Henryetta school board meeting. Sanford and Vanmeter will take their positions on the city council April 18.
In Dewar, Katie Quillin was the winner of the Trustee Office 3 seat. She received 51 votes while her opponent, Emily Ramirez, received 36.
