Is Bran Cereal: A Hidden Health Risk?
The World Health Organization advises that adults limit their daily intake of sodium to 2,000mg and added sugars to 50g. However, many popular “all-bran” cereals are packed with these hidden dangers.
One top-selling bran cereal contains as much as 874mg of sodium per serving and 18g of added sugars—more than you’ll find in Frosted Flakes!
The production process for these cereals includes another potential hazard: wheat berries are cracked and mixed with bran and malt flavoring before being cooked.
Malt flavoring often contains MSG, an additive linked to increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure, according to a study involving 1,227 participants—particularly among women.
Doctors also warn, “Starting your day with a grain-based breakfast can trigger hunger cravings more quickly, leading to overeating, weight gain, and other issues, compared to a whole-food or protein-rich breakfast.”
