Area voters will be going to the polls Nov. 8 with a wide variety of candidates and issues to be decided.
Two of those issues will be state questions that will change the Oklahoma constitution. SQ 777 is directed at the state’s agricultural industry and would put limitations on the legislature’s ability to govern some of that industry’s practices.
questionsThe second is SQ 779 that would add one cent in sales taxes on all purchases statewide. Funds generated would be used to fund education with part of the money going for teacher salaries, another part going to higher education, Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology and the state Department of Education.
Those questions were addressed Tuesday night at the October meeting of the Okmulgee County republican party. It provided a rebuttal from opponents of both propositions after a September meeting allowed proponents to express their views.
nearly 75 people attended the meeting and heard Brian Jones from the Kirkpatrick Foundation present opposition to SQ 777. Robert Aery, Deputy State Director of Americans for Prosperity in Oklahoma, provided comments against SQ 779.
Wrapping up the evening was Bill McArthur who urged those attending not to retain two of the Oklahoma Supreme Court justices. On the ballot this year are Douglas L. Combs and James R. Winchester.
