Usually a Veterans Day program at a school thanks all the current and former servicemen and women for protecting their country.
At Wilson Thursday afternoon, that program enabled one veteran to finally complete his high school education 72 years after he was drafted.
IMG 8732In an emotional and tear-filled presentation, Vernon Long received his diploma from high school principal Vernie Thomas. Long was only 17 days away from graduating in 1945 when he was drafted and sent to the Pacific.
After participating in the battle for Okinawa and watching the final battles of World War II come to an end, he returned home. He was told that he would have to repeat his entire senior  year to get his diploma. Instead, he went to work and made a life for him and his family. That included a number of years serving as commander of the Henryetta VFW post.
Students started their recognition with a luncheon for the veterans.
During the program, fourth and fifth grade students presented a musical salute while the Wilson FFA members honored the men and women who are still listed as Missing in Action.
Guest speaker for the event was Bill Goodner, current commander of Henryetta FVW post 539. He talked about the devotion between membes of the military. "There are countless examples of of military members risking and often losing their lives in defense of their comrades."
He said that same devotion should apply to the students. He urged senior class members and bigger members of each class to watch out for fellow students and come to their defense if needed. "If a classmate needs help, do all you can to help them out. If  you see someone being bullied, students who are bigger and stronger shoudl make it stop." He said it is not tolerated in the military and should not be tolerated at school. "Remember a bully is a coward," he said.
