Monday Henryetta fireman Tyler Wieland made his first radio call with a new designation. fire chief
For years the Henryetta native has been using the call designator of 124 but Monday he became Henryetta fireman 101.
That designator carries along with it the position of Henryetta fire chief.
Wieland has been on the fire department since 2008 but has been involved with firefighting for the past 18 years.
“I have come up through the ranks and am really looking forward to this position,” he said Monday.
The 2006 Henryetta high school graduate got his start at Dewar’s fire department as a volunteer then joined the Henryetta crew in a paid position.
He has an associate degree in fire and emergency management and can teach local firemen some of the skills they need for most emergencies. That background is going to be useful since he said he plans a number of training classes in the coming months and years ahead. “I want to really put an emphasis on fire rescue especially since we get a lot of vehicle calls due to our highway network around Henryetta.” Those courses will be including members of the area fire departments.
He takes over from David Bullard who had been Henryetta fire chief for the past 14 years. “David has been a great mentor for me. He spent time and taught me a lot, not only about firefighting but also how to improve as a manager.”
The new fire chief said he plans to get involved more in the community and wants to visit with the various clubs and organizations.
“Tyler is going to be a great asset to the fire department in this position,” Bullard said. “He is dedicated to the profession and wants to continue learning.”
Wieland is father of 12-year-old Tyson who goes to school at Morris.
