OKLAHOMA CITY – The wetlands boardwalk at Route 66 Park in Oklahoma City has reopened to the public, marking the completion of a significant renovation by the OKC Parks and Recreation maintenance team.
Set within the sprawling 148-acre Route 66 Park, the boardwalk is just one of the many attractions that make this destination unique. The park features picturesque ponds, walking and biking trails, and an observation tower offering breathtaking views of Lake Overholser. Visitors can also explore the Mother Road Memorial, a tribute to the history and legacy of Route 66.
The newly restored wetlands boardwalk stretches approximately 600 feet and winds through a serene marshland just west of the lake. It’s an ideal spot for birdwatching, with opportunities to see native wildlife such as waterfowl, scissor-tailed flycatchers, and red-winged blackbirds.
“Our maintenance team has an extensive skill set in construction and general upkeep,” said Brian Parker, OKC Parks Supervisor. “We were confident they could deliver this project on time and within budget. This was a challenging endeavor that tested their expertise, and the result is an outstanding space for everyone to enjoy.”
Originally opened in 2006, Route 66 Park has seen various additions over the years, including a skate park and athletic fields. However, the wetlands boardwalk faced continuous challenges due to the unique wetland geography, requiring regular repairs. Safety concerns led to its closure three years ago, but funding for a replacement wasn’t available until recently.
To save costs, the Parks Department took on the project in-house, reducing the budget to just $30,000. The maintenance team successfully balanced this extensive renovation with their routine duties, which include repairing sidewalks, bridges, and park facilities.
The boardwalk’s reopening is especially timely, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Route 66, established on November 11, 1926.
With its diverse attractions and historical significance, Route 66 Park continues to be a beloved destination for both locals and visitors, and the revitalized boardwalk enhances its appeal as a place of beauty, recreation, and reflection.
