Okmulgee native Spencer Torbett is spending time in Washington, D.C., this fall getting to see how the federal government works.
Mullin Spencer TorbettTorbett is spending two months working in the office of Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-02) drafting legislative briefs, answering phones, attending hearings and briefings on current legislative issues and giving tours of the U.S. Capitol to Second District constituents.
“Seeing Pope Francis at the Capitol was a once in a lifetime experience,” Torbett said of his internship. “Being here for the resignation of the Speaker of the House and the consequent congressional leadership scramble is also very interesting.”
A 2009 Morris High School graduate who majored in history at Oklahoma State University (OSU), Torbett said he learned about internship opportunities with Mullin after one of the congressman’s town hall meetings that he attended for a summer job.
“I would like to give a sincere thank you to Mr. James Jennings and the entire Muscogee Nation National Council,” Torbett added. “This opportunity would not have been possible without their support. I am forever grateful.”
Torbett said he is surprised by the diversity of cultures in the nation’s capital. However, he still misses the “laid-back nature” of his hometown, Okmulgee.
“It has been my favorite thing about the city,” he commented. “From the people to the food, the city is truly a melting pot of world culture.”
Mullin said he enjoys having Torbett as part of his D.C. team and appreciates his hard work.
“It is always great to see young Oklahomans interested and engaged in their government,” said Mullin. “I am so glad Spencer chose to spend part of his fall as member of our team.”
