Recent heavy rains have contributed to a problem at the Nichols Park spillway.
spillway erosionA combination of water rushing over the spillway waterfall coupled with storm water flowing down the drainage ditch has resulted in rocks and concrete filling in the drainage tunnel.
A large part of the cement stem wall has collapsed allowing a tree to be swept into the mouth of the tunnel.
The erosion also threatens the road surface above the spillway tunnel.
County commissioner James Connor said he is aware of the problem and is working with the city.
City officials are working with engineers for a solution to the problem.
A preliminary estimate for the spillway repairs is $558,748.
The city is also facing an issue with the Nichols Lake dam.
A leak has developed around the valve that would drain the lake. That valve and pipe was put in place when the lake was built nearly 100 years ago.
