The Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians (OAOP) has named Billie Corkerin of Henryetta the 2016 Paroptometric of the Year. The award goes to a paraoptometric who displays outstanding professional leadership as well as service to patients. Paraoptometrics are health professionals who assist optometric physicians in providing high levels of vision care to patients.billie
Billie is a technician at the Henryetta Eye Center, where she works alongside doctors Jay LaValley, Michael Brian and Sarah Mulliniks. She has been in the Optometry field for 13 years, and has earned all three professional certificates available to paraoptometrics.
Billie began her career in Optometry in 2002 when she saw a job opening at The Eye Center in Okmulgee. After six months, she decided she had found her calling.
"There is so much the eye tells us," said Billie. "It's incredibly rewarding being able to help patients improve their vision and their overall health."
Billie is a past president, vice president and member at large on Oklahoma Paraoptometric Section (OPS) Board. She is currently running for treasurer.
"Running an outstanding Optometry clinic like the Henryetta Eye Center takes team work," said OAOP Executive Director Joel Robison. "Paraoptometrists allow the optometric physicians to see more patients and elevate their level of service, and Billie is the best in the business.
She's also done excellent work on the OPS Board, giving that organization a larger footprint and making it a more effective voice for paraoptometrics. Her hard work has paid off, not only for her professionally, but for her patients and her colleagues, who have all benefitted from her commitment to excellence."
Not satisfied with the three professional certifications she has already earned, Billie is now a student at OSU Okmulgee, working on her business management degree.
Her advice to those starting out as paraoptometrics is to work hard, get involved and get educated.
"Set goals and work for them," she said. "Learn about your profession. Reach out to your colleagues and get on the OPS Board. Don't just go to work every day for a paycheck. "
When Billie's not hard at work, she's spending time with her two daughters, Kylee Jo and Shannan. They enjoy family outings, softball and fishing.
