A bill that will ban texting-while-driving in Oklahoma is going to the governor for her signature.
House Bill 1965 will make it illegal to drive while texting or reading texts. Lawbreakers could face a fine up to $100. It is a change in the current law that will enable officers to pull drivers over if they are seen texting. Under the present law, a motorist has to be seen driving recklessly or has a wreck.
The proposed new law creates the “Troopers Nicholas Dees and Trooper Keith Burch Act of 2015," in honor of two Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers who were struck by a vehicle while they were investigating a wreck on Interstate 40 east of Shawnee Jan. 31. Dees was killed and Burch was seriously injured. The driver of the vehicle that hit them reportedly was checking social media on his mobile telephone at the time of the mishap.
