A combination of tough defense and strong offense spelled the difference Friday night against the Henryetta Knights.
Checotah dominated the Wildcat field picking up 346 yards in offense while allowing Henryetta only 65. That was a complete reversal from last week when the Knights drove for 399 yards in offense and gave up only 100.
blocked PATChecotah came out blasting from the start with a 37-yard touchdown pass on a fourth and nine. A two-point PAT pass was good but a penalty forced the Wildcats to kick an extra point that was blocked. The Wildcats scored in six plays.
The Wildcats scored again after the Knights had to punt the ball away with a kick that stopped on the Henryetta 39. Once again, started moving the ball, with a pair of through the middle runs then a pass down the sideline. Even a fumble went in favor of the Wildcats when they picked up the ball and ran it to the HHS 17. Three plays later, the ball was at the Henryetta one and that turned into another TD.
With the score at 12-0, The Knights looked as thought they would turn the tables. A long pass to Brannon Murphy from near the midfield mark put the ball at the Checotah 37. Bo Adams connected with Steven Slade on a pass for the score. Avery moore ran the ball in for two giving the Knights a four-point deficit.
That would be the closest Henryetta would come to leading the rest of the night.
Checotah scored four more times in the third quarter for a 40-8 lead. In the fourth, the Knights held the Wildcats forcing a fourth down kick that was downed at the Henryetta one. On the next play, the ball got loose but Knight quarterback Jarrett Day was able to get his hands on it before he was tackled in the end zone for a two-point safety.
In the final minute of the game, the Wildcats got to the Henryetta 10 but the Knights were able to hold out and keep them from scoring.
During the game, the Knights gave up 171 yards on the ground while posting a negative 24. Henryetta fared better in the air, completing six of 13 throws for 89 yards.
Checotah picked up 171 yards on the ground and connected on 14 of 16 passes for 175 yards.
