Sen. Roger Thompson joined Sen. Don Barrington and committee staffers for the Senate Public Safety Committee along with other Senate staffers recently for a tour of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD).  The agency assists local police departments and sheriff’s offices with drug enforcement and human trafficking resources to combat crimes that are threats to local communities.
Senators with Weaver“I’ve visited with many law enforcement agencies throughout our district and state but it was especially eye opening to visit with officers at the Bureau of Narcotics, and to learn more about the ever increasing problem with prescription and street drugs as well as human trafficking in our state,” said Thompson, R-Okemah.  “I appreciate Director Weaver and the other officers for taking time away from their busy schedules to spend the day showing us around their facility and explaining the many aspects of their job.  I want to thank these brave public servants who put the safety of their communities above their own well-being.  They are true heroes and Oklahoma is fortunate to have them looking out for us.”
The agency is responsible for enforcing the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substance Act as well as training and assisting local law enforcement agencies in the investigation of the illegal use of controlled dangerous substances and also compiles drug related statistics.  The OBNDD has four divisions – Diversion, Intelligence, Enforcement, and Human Trafficking.  The agency also has an education group that travels around the state to present drug abuse awareness programs to school children as well as concerned adults.
Besides touring the agency’s main headquarters in Oklahoma, the group also visited the agency’s firing range for a weapons’ demonstration and to watch officers train for various types of operations.
