On July 12th, Nichols Park in Henryetta transformed into a vibrant hub of community spirit for the American Guardians’ Family Fun Day. Despite intermittent rain showers throughout the day, the enthusiasm of attendees never wavered, resulting in a memorable celebration filled with laughter, competition, and togetherness. The day kicked off at 9:00 AM with a six-person volleyball tournament on the Nichols Park courts. Undeterred by the drizzle, two teams battled it out with impressive serves and dives, showcasing both skill and camaraderie. The $30 entry fee per team ($5 per player) was a small price for the chance to compete for cash prizes, and the energy was electric as players and spectators cheered through the rain. The tournament set a lively tone for the day, proving that a little weather couldn’t dampen the competitive spirit.

Around noon, the focus shifted to the younger attendees with a free bicycle rally that brought smiles to children aged six and up. The event featured an exciting agility course and a thrilling bike race, with kids navigating obstacles and later in the race speeding along the track. The highlight was a heartfelt drawing organized by the American Guardians and generous donors, where four lucky children won brand-new bicycles. The joy on their faces was a testament to the event’s community-driven spirit, as families clapped and celebrated the winners under cloudy skies.

As the afternoon rolled in, Mother Nature offered a brief reprieve, allowing the much-anticipated cardboard boat races to take off at 4:00 PM. Teams of two to four participants showcased their creativity with boats crafted from cardboard, glue, duct tape, and latex paint—no foam or pool noodles allowed! The $20 entry fee per boat didn’t deter the imaginative designs, ranging from sleek vessels to whimsical creations. Spectators roared with laughter as some boats sailed triumphantly while others earned cheers for their “most eloquent sinking.” Awards for first and second place, most creative, and best sinker added to the fun, making this a highlight of the day.

As evening approached, the park buzzed with anticipation for the glow-in-the-dark beach dance party hosted by DJ Jase. Hundreds gathered, decked out in glowing headbands, necklaces, bracelets, and glasses sold by the American Guardians. The neon-lit dance floor pulsed with energy as families and friends danced under the open sky, the rain forgotten in the glow of the moment. The event was a perfect prelude to the grand finalea 20-minute fireworks show over the lake at Nichols Park. Starting at dark, the display lit up the night with bursts of color and sparkle, drawing gasps and applause from the crowd. Live-streamed on the The Henryettan’s  Facebook page, the show reached even those who couldn’t attend in person as far away as Illinois and other states.

Throughout the evening, food trucks and vendors kept everyone fueled. The event’s success was a testament to the resilience of the Henrietta community, who embraced the day’s activities despite the on-and-off rain. Proceeds from the event supported the American Guardians’ 501(c)(3) initiatives, including their annual toy drive for Shriners Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, and other local community projects.

Reflecting on the day, it’s clear that Family Fun Day was more than just an event—it was a celebration of community spirit.
