The Importance of Special Elections: Why Your Vote Matters

Special elections play a crucial role in shaping local and state government, often determining key leadership positions that impact policies and decisions for years to come. The upcoming special election on March 4th is particularly significant for voters in State Senate District 8, as it will decide who fills the unexpired term for this important legislative seat. The outcome of this race will affect legislation on key issues such as education, infrastructure, and economic development in our region.

Additionally, for residents in the Liberty Public School District, this election includes a Special School Proposition, making it even more essential to participate. Whether you vote early or on Election Day, your voice matters in shaping the future of our community.

EARLY VOTING BEGINS FEBRUARY 27

Early voting begins Thursday, February 27, for voters in Okmulgee County. Voters who cannot make it to the polls on March 4th Election Day have the option of voting early at the Okmulgee County Election Board. The unexpired term State Senate District 8 seat will be on the March 4th Special Republican Primary Election, and a Special School Proposition for Liberty Public Schools will be on the ballot.

Okmulgee County Election Board Secretary Ashley Carnes said early voting is open to all voters.

“You do not need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board or State Election Board—from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on Election Day or who want to avoid long lines,” Carnes said.

Early voting is available at the Okmulgee County Courthouse, 314 W 7th Street, Room 102, on:

  • Thursday, February 27, and Friday, February 28 – from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 1 – from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Carnes reminds voters that early voting is only available at the election board office.

MARCH 4TH: ELECTION DAY DETAILS

Election Day is Tuesday, March 4th, with polling places open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. All 25 polling locations in Okmulgee County will be open.

To vote on the Special School Proposition, residents must be registered with an address in the Liberty Public School District. The State Senate Special Election is a Primary Election, meaning that only registered party members can vote in their party’s primary due to Oklahoma’s closed primary system.
