Henryetta Public Library Continues Dinosaur Adventure with Fun-Filled Summer Reading Program

The dinosaur adventure continued this week at the Henryetta Public Library as children participating in the Summer Reading Program once again traveled back millions of years to a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Leading the prehistoric journey were Amber Mordecai and Mylena Poulton, who welcomed the young readers and shared an exciting story packed with fun facts and fascinating discoveries. This week’s featured book was Oh Say Can You Say Di-no-Saur? All About Dinosaurs, a nonfiction children’s book inspired by the world of Dr. Seuss. Written by Bonnie Worth and illustrated by Steve Haefele, the book combines colorful illustrations, engaging rhymes, and educational content to help children learn about the incredible creatures that once ruled the planet.

Throughout the reading, the children revisited several dinosaurs they learned about during last week’s program while also being introduced to many new species. They discovered interesting facts about how different dinosaurs lived, what they ate, and how scientists continue to learn about them today.

One of the highlights of the lesson focused on fossils and how they are formed. The children learned that fossils are the preserved remains or traces of ancient plants and animals that have been buried under layers of sediment over millions of years. These fossils provide important clues that help paleontologists piece together the story of life on Earth long before humans existed.

After story time concluded, the learning continued with a hands-on activity that quickly became a favorite among the young participants. Each child had the opportunity to become a junior paleontologist by digging their very own dinosaur out of a toy egg. The excitement in the room was evident as the children carefully uncovered their prehistoric discoveries.

Once their dinosaurs were fully excavated, the children traced their newfound dinosaur shapes onto pieces of cardstock. They then used their creativity to color and decorate their dinosaur designs before turning them into personalized magnets to take home as a keepsake from the day’s adventure.

The combination of reading, learning, and hands-on activities created an engaging and educational experience for everyone involved. The Summer Reading Program continues to provide children with opportunities to explore new topics, develop a love of reading, and participate in fun activities that encourage creativity and imagination.

Parents and children alike enjoyed another successful week at the library, and smiles could be seen throughout the room as the young explorers proudly showed off their dinosaur magnets and shared what they had learned.
