Thompson resigns senate seat

State Senator Roger Thompson said he is resigning from office effective Nov. 1, 2024.

Thompson, a republican, has served as District 8 senator since 2014. He has served as the chair of the appropriations committee. In the final weeks of this current session, he was abruptly replaced by Senate President Pro Team Greg Treat. In his short letter to treat, Thompson said he was “grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to serve the people of Senate District 8 for the last 10 years.”

Both Thompson and Treat were opposing the proposals to cut the state income tax. This past session the senate defied not take up any plans for an income tax cut.

That resignation should require a special election to be held to fill out the remainder of Thompsons term. In addition to service in the senate, Thompson is the publisher of the Okemah News Leader.
