On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, the town of Morris, OK lost one of its own when Wendall Leon Haworth, Sr., 83, passed away. Wendall had been an active member of the Morris community since 1973, when he and his young family moved here, and he opened a small auto parts store. A friendly and kind man who was always ready with a funny story and a willingness to help his neighbor, Wendall began building what became a thriving network of friends, family, church members, business owners, and customers who knew they could always count on him.
Born January 4, 1941, in Jennings, Oklahoma, Wendall graduated from Jennings High School and went on to study at OSU-IT in Okmulgee. A skilled mechanic who had a gift for figuring out what was wrong with practically any vehicle, Wendall began his career at Carnation after graduating from OSU. He did well there, but he knew he wanted to have a business of his own. So, with the support of his wife, Freda, he moved to Morris and started what became known far and wide as The Parts Barn.
More than just a business, The Parts Barn became a cornerstone of the Morris community. Everyone knew that at Wendall’s place, you could not only find parts for their vehicles, but also hear one of Wendall’s tall tales, corny jokes, or a bit of harmless gossip. Folks also knew that Wendall and his crew at the Parts Barn would be there for them in a pinch. If you were looking for a deal, or needed some local knowledge, or just wanted to shoot the breeze and get out of the weather, everyone knew the Parts Barn was a prime “go to” spot in town. When the business and his home were destroyed as were many others in the community by the 1984 Morris tornado, Wendall never hesitated to rebuild and encouraged others to do the same.
Wendall’s life was not without loss, of course. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Freda; his eldest son, Wendall Leon Haworth, Jr.; brothers Olan Haworth and Nolan Haworth; sister Dovie Carper; and parents Merle and Mable Haworth. As a man who valued family, faith, and friendship above all, the passing of his loved ones was particularly difficult. But Wendall was a fighter who viewed sorrow as a part of life and strove to put his faith in action by helping others to get him through.
He is survived by his loving wife of 24-years, Carolyn Haworth, and his children: Wade Haworth and wife Becky; Kara Kuhlman and husband Tim; Tracey Milling and husband Jimmy; Bryan Stevens and wife Lisa; and Grant Stevens. Wendall was a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Chris Fox and wife Heidi; Cassidy Crocker and husband Ethan; Katie Thorman and husband Trevor; Jesse Richel and wife Sage; Taylor Armstrong and husband Tanner; Keaton Kuhlman; Keith Kuhlman and partner Mariah Meschkat; Alison Brent and husband JJ; Adam Milling and wife Daniela; Aaron Milling and partner Katie Brunet; Kayla Stevens and partner Bobbie Simon; Shelby Garcia and husband Tyler; Carli Cormier and husband Kendrick; and Christina Weimar and husband Ross. He also leaves behind 31 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. Wendall is also survived by his brother, Keith Haworth, and wife Karen, as well as many nieces, nephews, and people who viewed him as part of their family.
If you knew Wendall, you knew he never shied away from hard work, infused everything he did with integrity, and was willing to lend a hand (or tool, or auto part) to whomever needed it. He will be remembered for his kindness, ability to fix anything, and probably some convoluted story he told to “pull your leg” for a laugh. His legacy lives on through the generations of family he loved so deeply and the countless friendships he made throughout his lifetime.
Services to celebrate Wendall’s life will be held at Trinity Baptist Church in Morris on Monday, September 23rd at 10:00am.
The viewing will be held at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home (Old Public Library) 421 S. Hughes St. in Morris on Sunday, Sept. 22nd from 2 pm to 4 pm.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Beggs. Memories, condolences, photos and videos may be shared with the family on Wendall‘s Tribute Page of our website. www.mcclendon-winters.com

Sherman Gene Smith was born on January 27, 1959, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Gene and Lela Lou (Martin) Smith. He left this world on Saturday, September 7, 2024, in Oklahoma City, at the age of 65. Between his birth and passing, Sherman lived a life full of love, accomplishment, and joy, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Sherman grew up in Pocola, Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school in 1977. A true multi-talent, he played four sports, served as class president, was active in the Student Council, and was voted “Best All Around” by his peers. After high school, he attended Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah on an athletic scholarship. Though an injury ended his college athletic career, it didn’t dim his passion for learning. Sherman studied botany, chemistry, and biology, serving as a teacher’s assistant, managing the campus greenhouse, and assisting with a program tracking animals via radio signals. He earned his degree from NSU in 1982.

It was at NSU that Sherman met the love of his life, Susan “Susie” Mayberry, during a dance where they first exchanged glances across the floor. Their first date marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship. They married on May 25, 1983, at Pocola First Baptist Church and embarked on a life filled with love, education, and family. Together, they raised three sons, Steven, Brett, and Taylor, while also nurturing their shared passion for teaching.

Sherman began his teaching career at Pocola High School, where he also coached basketball while Susie completed her degree. In 1985, the couple moved to Susie’s hometown of Mounds, Oklahoma, where Sherman would spend the next four decades shaping the minds of students and becoming a beloved fixture in the community. He taught AP Chemistry, zoology, botany, biology, anatomy, physiology, and even math, along with serving as athletic director, National Beta Club sponsor, senior class sponsor, and coach. His quick wit, dry sense of humor, and genuine interest in his students made him a favorite among both students and colleagues. His love for teaching extended well beyond the classroom; Sherman and Susie were present at nearly every academic and athletic event in Mounds, where their presence will be deeply missed.

An avid Oklahoma Sooners fan, Sherman was also a man of many talents. He achieved a second-degree black belt in Goju-ryu karate, and in 1996, he even volunteered to drive a bus during the Atlanta Olympics. Despite his wealth of knowledge, he famously lacked a good sense of direction-just one of the many quirks that made him so endearing.

Sherman enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, and spending time with his grandchildren outside the classroom. Whether it was watching OU games, mowing his lawn, or engaging in spirited debates about everything from sports to how to pronounce “aluminum foil” or “Cool Whip,” Sherman brought warmth and laughter to those around him. He loved visiting with friends and his three sons, often trading good-natured jabs and engaging in heated discussions.

Sherman is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susie; his sons Steven (and wife Audra) of Port Orchard, WA, Brett (and wife Alexis) of Jenks, OK, and Taylor (and wife Sarah) of Prattville, OK; his grandchildren River, Mason, Cameron, and Arlo Gene, with another grandchild on the way. He also leaves behind his sister Sharon (and husband Allen Hines) of Baytown, TX, and many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Caudle Auditorium on the Mounds School campus. A celebration of Sherman’s life will take place at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 14, in the Carter Fieldhouse on the Mounds campus.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sherman’s memory to Mounds Public Schools, c/o Jonathan Clay, P.O. Box 189, Mounds, OK 74047 or by CLICKING HERE

Barbara Ann Lopez was born on July 13, 1939, in New Iberia, La to her parents Edwin and Effie Fabre. Growing up in New Iberia, she was Cajun to the bone and loved her roots. It was not uncommon in their house for her dad to make his homemade boudin, cracklin and gingerbread planks. They also enjoyed talking French with one another. “Ca c’est bon” She had two sisters that she loved very much, Margaret and Helen. They enjoyed going to their local hangout, Taylor’s Drug Store & sitting at the counter and drinking milkshakes with all of their friends. She went to Mt. Carmel Academy and was a bowling champ, a cheerleader, Miss Turkey Queen and she also held the title of Miss Iberia Parish Queen in 1956 at the age of 17. She was a sight to see with her beautiful blue eyes!  She met her husband and the love of her life, James “Jimmy” Lopez and they were married for 50 years before he passed. Their love for each other was what true love really looks like. They loved doing everything together!  They loved fishing and crabbing, going to the levee, going dancing, going to Holly beach, barbecues, family adventures to Galveston beach, going to church, going for drives, going visit family and eating Cajun food especially boiled crawfish. Granny was known for her meat, rice and gravy, cabbage rolls, crawfish étouffée, egg in the hole and little Cajun tarts, none could compare.
She loved her kids, her grandkids and great grandchildren very much and left us all with lots of treasured memories to hold dear. Her three kids were her pride and joy, she treasured Jamie, Gwen and Frank and her little girl who went to heaven, Leslie. They were her world, and she loved every moment she got to talk to or spend time with them. She considered them her best friends and they considered her theirs. They gave her ten amazing grandchildren and six great-grandkids.
Her love for the Lord and for others left an indelible mark on all of us in one way or another. She truly loved like Jesus did and gave her all in every way. Her and her husband Jimmy felt the call of God on their life and attended Rhema Bible College and then pioneered 5 churches in their lifetime. She was a powerful woman of God, full of the Holy Ghost and a prayer warrior, full of faith and believed God without wavering! She gave all that she had; she was the most giving, generous, loving woman there ever was. She never missed an opportunity to make you feel loved and special. Truly a woman after God’s own heart. Funeral services for Edward F. Friesen will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Prague, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at the Boley Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Edward Friesen, born to John and Katherine Friesen on October 22, 1942, in Morris, Manitoba, Canada, passed away peacefully at his home in Boley, Oklahoma, on September 3, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. He was 81 years, 10 months, and 12 days old.
Ed moved to Mexico with his parents at the age of 6, where he received his education and also met his sweetheart. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Kornelsen, on January 7, 1968. Together, they had a family of nine children, one of whom passed away in infancy.
Ed accepted Jesus as his Savior in his late teens and was baptized on July 31, 1960. His faith was central to his life, and he was ordained as a minister in November 1986. Throughout his life, he expressed a deep desire for his children and grandchildren to follow Jesus.
In March 1977, Ed moved his family from Mexico to Oklahoma, where he instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and essential life skills through his actions. While in Mexico, he began his career by transporting equipment between the United States and Mexico, eventually dedicating many years to farming. Despite the economic challenges of relying solely on the land for income, Ed remained steadfast in his commitment to farming, making it his primary source of livelihood. His persistence and dedication were key to navigating the uncertainties of agricultural life.
Ed enjoyed a variety of hobbies, which included participating in outdoor grilling and cookouts. Being involved in family activities was always a highlight even if it meant sleeping in a tent. He always wanted to be included where the action was happening. Ed had a passion for rebuilding tractors, demonstrating a keen eye for restoring value to old equipment.
He cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren; he was often seen holding one or more on his lap.
Throughout his life, Ed faced several significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 44. He underwent four surgeries, which temporarily shifted farm responsibilities to his teenage sons. During the wheat harvest, his father from Canada came to help, and the community also rallied to assist with haying.
In September 2007, Ed faced a major setback after a head-on collision that significantly slowed him down. A few years later, he endured a tire explosion that damaged his hearing. However, Ed was not a quitter; he persevered, and God blessed him with relatively good health despite these challenges. His final battle with cancer involved numerous trips to the doctor for radiation and immunotherapy treatments, but unfortunately, these efforts were not successful.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty; four sons: Jim and Irene Friesen of Checotah, OK; Dennis and Elizabeth (Pearl) Friesen of Checotah, OK; Ronald and Rosie Friesen of Boley, OK; and Lloyd and Brenda Friesen of Boley, OK. He is also survived by four daughters: Sandra and Wayne Plett of Boley, OK; JoAnn and Kenneth Dueck of Cove, OR; Janet and Jake Doerksen of Keota, OK; and Marlys and Abram (Abe) Enns of Paden, OK. Ed was a proud grandfather to 44 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Ed was one of ten siblings, including Elmer Friesen of Australia, and Helen and Joseph Kornelsen of Mexico, along with Norman and Alvina Friesen, Leo Friesen, Rosalyn Loewen, Marie and Bill Letkeman, and Kathryn and Wilbert Loewen, all residing in Manitoba.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katherine Friesen; two brothers, John and Ronald Friesen; a brother-in-law, Henry Loewen; one infant daughter; and three infant grandchildren.
Ed Friesen will be remembered for his unwavering faith, dedication to family, and the love he shared with all who knew him.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who prayed for the family, and brought meals during this difficult time of his final illness and passing.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Friesen, Joshua Friesen, Riley Friesen, Ashton Friesen, Kenley Plett and Justin Dueck.

Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah, Oklahoma.
