Sucker Day Festival On Main Street - Wetumka - Sept 28, 2024
The annual Sucker Day Festival in Wetumka commemorates a quirky chapter in the town’s history, when local business owners fell victim to a smooth-talking con man. In the early 1950s, a man named F. Bam Morrison arrived in Wetumka, convincing residents to invest in a grand circus event. Excited for the show, people bought tickets in advance, stocked up on food, drinks, and souvenirs, and prepared for large crowds.
On the morning of the parade, the streets were lined with eager citizens, but the circus never came. Morrison had skipped town the night before, taking the money and leaving Wetumka empty-handed.
Rather than dwell on the deception, Wetumka turned the fiasco into fun. Using the food and decorations intended for the circus, the town threw a celebration instead. The first Sucker Day was held in 1953, marking the community’s resilience and ability to turn disappointment into joy.
Today, the festival is a vibrant celebration, featuring arts and crafts, live music, and a range of activities. The parade showcases antique cars, tractors, horses, and riding clubs, while the annual Sucker Day poker run draws motorcyclists from all around. From classic burgers and hot dogs to diverse ethnic foods, there’s something for everyone. Come join Wetumka in this unique celebration of history and humor!
