Ukrainian armed forces have breached two defensive lines in Russia’s southwestern Kursk Oblast since launching an operation on Tuesday. This incursion, extending 9 miles into Russian territory, marks Ukraine’s largest cross-border push since the war began 30 months ago, involving approximately 1,000 soldiers and dozens of armored vehicles.
The operation takes place amidst a mostly stagnant front line spanning 600 miles between the two countries. Analysts report that Ukraine has seized around 50 square miles of territory, including a Gazprom-owned gas metering station, the Russian town of Sudzha, and at least 11 other settlements (see map). Images from the operation revealed the use of US-made equipment, though American officials have stated that the incursion does not violate US policies regarding the use of its weapons in the conflict.
Analysts suggest the sudden move into Russian territory may be intended to divert Russian forces from active conflict zones. A Ukrainian adviser indicated that the operation is also aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position in potential negotiations with Russia.
