Pittsburg, Oklahoma — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 539 has proudly announced the winners of its local competitions for the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship programs. These annual contests, sponsored by the VFW, encourage students to reflect on patriotic themes and express their views on supporting our nation.
Mason Coxsey’s winning essay also earned him first place at the VFW District 7 level, advancing him further in the statewide and potentially national competition.
This year’s theme for both contests was “How do you show patriotism and support for our country?” Students from area schools submitted thoughtful essays, with top honors going to young writers who demonstrated strong understanding of patriotism through personal actions, community involvement, and appreciation for American values.
Molly Chew’s outstanding entry secured her second place at the VFW District level for the Patriot’s Pen contest.
The Voice of Democracy program, established in 1947, is designed for high school students (grades 9–12) and involves writing and recording an audio essay. The Patriot’s Pen contest targets middle school students (grades 6–8) with a written essay of 300–400 words. Both programs offer participants a chance to win scholarships, with national awards reaching up to $35,000 for Voice of Democracy and $5,000 for Patriot’s Pen.
VFW Post 539 commended all participants for their meaningful contributions and highlighted how these contests foster a deeper appreciation for democracy and service to country. Congratulations to the winners and all entrants — their voices truly reflect the spirit of patriotism!
