Evacuations in Athens Amid Wildfire Crisis "Developing Story"

A raging wildfire near Athens, Greece, has forced the evacuation of thousands, including patients and staff from a children’s hospital, a military hospital, and two monasteries. The fire, which broke out on Sunday about 20 miles northeast of the capital, has already claimed at least one life and remains largely out of control. It has spread across nearly 20 miles, with some flames towering over 80 feet high. Strong winds, extreme heat, drought, and challenging terrain have all contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze.

This wildfire is the most severe Greece has faced so far this year, with the country enduring dozens of fires during its hottest June and July on record. As of yesterday, more than 700 firefighters, supported by aerial units and volunteers, are battling the flames. Several EU countries have also stepped in to provide assistance.
