Kimberly Cheatle, The Secret Service director resigned on Tuesday following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump
Following a brutal hearing at Capitol Hill where both the Democrats and Republicans called for her resignation - the director handed in her resignation as of Yesterday.
The Secret Service director resigned on Tuesday following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, which sparked widespread criticism over the agency’s failure to protect both current and former presidents.
Kimberly Cheatle, who had been the director since August 2022, faced increasing pressure to step down amid multiple investigations into how a gunman was able to get so close to the Republican presidential nominee at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle stated in an email to staff obtained by The Associated Press. “Given recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign as your director.”
Cheatle’s resignation will not alleviate the ongoing scrutiny of the agency following the July 13 incident, especially with the Democratic National Convention and a hectic presidential campaign season approaching. Lawmakers from both parties have pledged further investigations. An inspector general probe and an independent, bipartisan review initiated by President Joe Biden will continue to keep the agency under close examination.
