Middle East on High Alert
US and Israeli intelligence have reported that a potential Iranian attack on Israel could happen as early as this week. The anticipated strike is believed to be in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, which Iran blames on Israel.
The heightened threat is marked by increased activity among Iran’s missile and drone units, reminiscent of the buildup before Iran launched over 300 projectiles into Israel last April. In response, the Pentagon has deployed a guided missile submarine to the region and is accelerating the arrival of an aircraft carrier to bolster Israel’s defense. Israel has elevated its military alert status and initiated both offensive and defensive preparations.
In a joint statement, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK have urged Iran to refrain from any attacks and called for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Talks are scheduled for Thursday, but it remains uncertain whether Hamas will participate.
