Typhoon Yagi Leaves Trail of Destruction in Northern Vietnam: 14 Dead, 176 Injured

It was reported in the state media on Sunday (September 8, 2024), that over 14 people have been killed while 176 more were injured as Typhoon Yagi struck northern region. Nevertheless, the officials insisted on the fact that heavy rains and dangerous conditions would go on.

Vietnamese officials termed the Yagi as one of the fiercest storms in the past about ten years, which hit the areas. Hurricane B provided none of them; while leaving over 3 million people without electricity, it destroyed more than 116000 hectares of rice and fruit crops, closed four airports and cancelling hundreds of flights.

The typhoon that struck Hainan in China later moved to Vietnamese provinces of Quang Ninh and Haiphong on Saturday with wind speeds of 149 km per hour or 92 mph. It has however for the past fifteen hours been battering the area with strong winds and rain and Sunday morning it was downgraded to a tropical depression.

The Vietnam’s meteorological department expected more and more raining, which may lead to flood, flash flood and landslides. Employees in Hanoi with the support of the police forces and the army started with the cleaning works removing felled trees, broken power lines, and damaged roofs.
