U.S. House Passes $95 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine, Israel, and the Pacific
In a significant move, the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a $95 billion aid package aimed at bolstering military and humanitarian support for Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region. The package includes $60 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific, particularly Taiwan.
Ukraine: Ukraine is set to receive $60 billion to counter Russia’s ongoing aggression. This includes $23 billion for replenishing U.S. weapons stocks, $14 billion for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, and over $11 billion to support current U.S. military operations in the region and enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the bill, stating it would help save lives and strengthen both nations.
Israel: Israel will receive $26 billion, including $5.2 billion for missile defense systems like the Iron Dome, and $9.2 billion for humanitarian efforts in Gaza and the West Bank. However, the aid package prohibits funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the support, while Palestinian leaders criticized the bill as an aggression against Palestinians.
Indo-Pacific: The bill allocates $8 billion to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific, with significant funds directed to Taiwan. This includes $2 billion for military financing and $1.9 billion to build Taiwan’s defense capabilities. The package also supports U.S. military infrastructure in the region to bolster strategic deterrence.
The legislation now moves to the Democrat-majority Senate, where it is expected to pass. President Joe Biden has urged swift approval, emphasizing the urgent needs of Ukraine and Israel amidst ongoing conflicts.
